Benzoin Tears - Sumatra
Selected at origin, in North Sumatra
Our benzoin comes from the forests around Lake Toba in North Sumatra, the home region of Ance, one of our directors.
We work directly with a local collection and grading centre, close to the communities who harvest the resin.
The communities manage their benzoin forests collectively under customary rules known as Parpatihan. These prohibit tapping young trees and limit excessive cuts.
The standing trees provide an important source of income for the families who care for the forest.
In 2024, 2,917 hectares of the community’s customary forest were formally recognised.
After harvest, the benzoin tears are carefully cleaned, sorted and graded at origin using sieves of different mesh sizes. We offer four grades to meet different specifications: Kasar, Almond, Corn and Sand.
- Grade A : Kasar
- Grade B : Almond
- Grade C : Corn
- Grade D : Sand
